My favorite place to stay and fish is the Perdido Key. If you venture east a few miles, you’ll find Key Largo. A lesser known, but equally as lovely place to visit. The architecture in Key Largo is a little more primitive than in Key West. There are fewer modern homes there, but many retirees and several Renaissance homes. The island takes pride in its heritage and many of the homes are restored copy of structures from the 17th and 18th centuries. One of the must-see homes is the King Edward Whinehouse which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are other homes worth seeing on the islands, but most of them are private.
There are accommodations in Key Largo, some of which are excellent. There are also a number of hotels in the area, among them the Resorts at the Beach,ibel Casa del Palmo, and Maggiano’s Little Italy. If you are traveling by ferry from Key West, you will be able to save a lot of money by staying in South Beach. It is only one hour from the mainland and it has numerous accommodations that are within walking distance. There are also spas and well-known golf resorts in South Beach.
Many people don’t get to Key West very often because it is such a long trip. The reasons for that include the expense of flighting there and the short stay on the island. However, there are other areas of Florida that are not as expensive as much of the mainland. I began my trip to Key West in October 1992. It was right after Christmas and right before New Year’s. I thought it would be a great vacation.
I was far from disappointed. The weather was warm and humid and the people were wonderful. The scenery was diverse. I saw cotton fields and sugarcane fields. I also saw an Ernest Hemingway house and aStuds Terrace beach front hotel.
I spent a lot of time on the beach watching small boats and big ships that were on the water. I saw many a sea bird. There are a lot of pine trees and hundreds of palms covered trees on the island. The sea is clear and the sand is soft and golden. The temperatures average about 80 in the summer and rarely drop below 70 during the winter.
I recommend you catch a boat and take a tour of the island. You will see many of the sites mentioned above. You will also be able to relax on the beach or in your hotel on the deck. You can read a book or sulk in the lobby. However, you will need to exert a little effort to have a good time. These days there are almost 100,000 people visiting Key West annually. When I was there the island seemed very deserted. There were noeboard trips to the Keys to begin with, so it was quiet. But, as I mentioned, things began to change.
Some families who weremoaning their way across the ocean came up and asked if we had children staying here. We told them we didn’t, but if they were family, they could stay free. We didn’t have a lot, but scooped up arevetted empty house and brought it home to have our own family portrait done. There was a pretty girl who came to the house with three small children. I couldn’t believe I was family.
I wheeled the cottage and all out onto the deck. I felt like I was part of a cocoon. I was still soenior man of my home.
